Re: Support the Starbucks Union!
Fri, May 22, 2009 - 11:58 AMThere are a number of queers who work at Starbucks. Some workers involved in the current union drive there are gay and lesbian. Also it is a question of simplem justice. I believe that as a community we should link up with the union movement. Many unions support gay issues. If there is a boycott of Starbucks I will help organize support in the GLBT Community. -

Re: Support the Starbucks Union!
Fri, May 22, 2009 - 1:13 PMp.s. Here is a link to "Pride at Work" which is a part of the AFL-CIO. The union movement out in California was very active in the effort to defeat Prop 8. I think the very existence of this group strengthens the gay community. Not just in terms of numbers and influence, but it debunks the stereotype that the community is primarly made up of affluent professional white guys. Pride at Work reflects the fact that the GLBT Community includes millions of working class queers. -

Re: Support the Starbucks Union!
Fri, May 22, 2009 - 5:10 PMI think i have to agree with K.,as much as i can see that it may help the GLBTQ etc. cause, this is a queer history tribe.
If you have someything about the (i am btw not a fan of Mc coffeebucks,i see them as not much better than the Donald branch of it) history of unions and queer issues that's a whole other story.
Not trying to be an old fart, which i am but just i don't see a connection in the substance of this post and the Tribe.
I consider it unrelated ,dare i say spam(or ground meat/coffee).
Sorry hummingbird.Maybe the Bosey can react. And i'll be happy to read some union inspired history.Maybe post this in your blog/events/listing?Or better,i am sure there are coffee tribes.Wake em up! -

Re: Support the Starbucks Union!
Thu, June 4, 2009 - 9:50 AMThat's great for the union support on gay marriage, but BFD on Starbucks. Seriously. Lots of gay people have grass growing in their backyards, but we don't see posts about it in Queer History. Not to be a jerk here, Hummingbird, but posting something that isn't related to Queer History and then saying you'll just leave it to the moderator is bullsh*t. Thanks for your other posts and your work with unions. Sorry for the mixed messages.

Re: ancillary issues in limited-mission tribes
Thu, June 4, 2009 - 12:40 PMI have to admit that my opinions are in the realm of K and Corey's: I consider it irresponsible to refuse to do any self-editing and then leave it to the Mod to be the proverbial bad guy.
Tribes that have boundaries and missions inherent in their names deserve to have their missions and boundaries honored.
It was this kind of thinking that led the organizers of the March on Washington a few years back to have accumulated 37 platforms before the committee finally fell apart from all its divisions.
It's a matter of personal responsibility. Temperance is not just a construct of the Patriarchy—it's a mark of maturity. -

Re: ancillary issues in limited-mission tribes
Thu, June 4, 2009 - 12:53 PMIt was Corey's idea to leave it up to the moderator to determine if this thread can stay or not. I will not consider the Mod a bad guy if he decides to remove it. In the mean time if you don't like the subject matter then just don't bother to read it. -

Re: ancillary issues in limited-mission tribes
Thu, July 23, 2009 - 7:55 AMThis may be more of a current event than history (I guess current stuff becomes history the next day), but I find it interesting because I used to work for Starbucks and believe me the people who work there need a union. The way I see it companies like Starbucks belong to all sorts of business associations and have paid lobbyists to work on their own behalf. It is a simple matter of fairness that the employees should have the right to band together to protect their own interests. Strong unions help to level the playing field. Unions help raise the standard of living for workers in other business as well.
It is good to hear that some fellow queers are involved in union organizing.

Re: ancillary issues in limited-mission tribes
Thu, June 4, 2009 - 1:01 PMMy thought....this is one posting. It's history ,let it go.The moderator is obviously not involved .Maybe we can stop reacting and make it a"queer history"tribe again now we have the *fux-coffee out of our sysytem?
Nice flying penis, K.Maybe a post about THAT subject to change the subject?
I am happy for you Hummingbird.
And so....again goes Shirley Bassey www.youtube.com/watch -

Re: ancillary issues in limited-mission tribes
Thu, June 4, 2009 - 1:17 PMPS,Humminbird....now that's a twist/turn.I did not suggest it .I politely agreed to your smart comment,which obviously went straight(no pun)by the mod's moderating.
Let's stick by the subject and not make it something else others had no first in.As i stated weeks (?)ago, this makes it the longest thread since the start of this tribe. It's turning into a kitkat-corner.have some milk and get over it. -
-
Re: ancillary issues in limited-mission tribes
Thu, June 4, 2009 - 1:25 PMCorey said; "have some milk and get over it."
I guess I kind of did have some milk as it were by posting some important gay history about Harvey Milk's support for a union organizing effort during the 1970's.
